Word Portraits: Getting to Character through Rhythm and Point of View, with Prompt Press & Free Generative Workshops

PromptPressFor this special installment of FGW Jennifer Colville will discuss how looking at visual art can open writers to new formal possibilities. Together, we’ll look at how Picasso’s vision intersected with and inspired Gertrude Stein’s Word Portraits, and we will compose a word portrait of our own. Now in its third inspiring year, the Free Generative Writing Workshop is Iowa City’s only monthly writing workshop that brings together adult writers of all levels to have their imaginations sparked by our area’s most talented writers and teachers, at absolutely no cost. The goal is to create a supportive environment in which participants can generate new writing and meet others interested in the same. Each month a different talented writer-teacher from our area invites us to write from an original prompt — and then composes along beside us as we explore where that prompt leads. After writing, we have the option to share what we’ve created and receive feedback.
