Hot off the presses! The 2016 edition of The Best American Essays will be published on October 4th. Be among the first to experience one of the essays chosen by guest editor Jonathan Franzen and series editor Robert Atwan from the thousands published in print and online magazines over the previous year. Tucson writer Katherine E. Standefer will read her provocative (and for mature audiences) essay “In Praise of Contempt,” which was first published in The Iowa Review. Her essay exemplifies what Franzen writes was his main criterion for choosing work for this edition of Best American Essays, “risk”: the risk involved in “championing an unpopular opinion, the possibility of ruining a professional career, or irrevocably offending family.” Lynne Nugent, managing editor of The Iowa Review, will also read her essay “The Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card,” which was named a Notable Essay in Best American Essays and was first published in Full Grown People.
